PERSONALITY,
Evelyn is very secretive, very cautious, and kind of closed-off. She’s very responsible, very trustworthy, and extremely compassionate. She shows a lot of respect for everyone that she knows, especially when they’re older than her, but the thing is, Evelyn isn’t some dumb girl that’s there to be walked over. She’s incredibly bright and what’s more, she’s self-sufficient. She doesn’t open up to people, but she has a very good reason why she can’t open up. She’s great at working a situation, however, and chances are, she’s worked you without you even realizing it.
HISTORY,
First of all, whatever you’ve heard about Evelyn Dawkins, take it with a grain of salt. Chances are, she’s lied to you. She’s not a compulsive liar, she doesn’t have some sort of mental illness and shouldn’t be trusted. She has her reasons and these are them.
Evelyn isn’t her real name. That’s the name she uses to keep her identity hidden. Evelyn was born in Seattle, Washington, to wealthy parents. She was bright and there was every possibility that she’d end up in some sort of job that made her a lot of money. Her father had a very successful military career, but married her mother, the daughter of a coffee king, essentially marrying into wealth. Born on Thanksgiving Day, Evelyn was originally named Gwyneth Charlotte Connors. Her childhood wasn’t out of the ordinary, in fact it was very ordinary. She was the youngest of three, her two older brothers followed in their father’s footsteps, despite her grandparents wanting one of them to be the heir to their coffee empire. She got on well with her older brothers, they were all a very happy family.
But her life changed when she was in high school. It began with something very simple. As Gwyneth, she wasn’t popular, but she wasn’t a loser, either. She sat comfortably being the girl who people knew, but didn’t really take any notice of. She didn’t want trouble. She just wanted to study to get into a good university, to become a doctor and make her family proud. Strange things sort of happened to her and before long, her family were beginning to think it was someone doing it on purpose. They believed she had a stalker. This person made her life a living hell, but it was worse because they couldn’t do anything about it, they didn’t know who it was. All they could do was make sure she wasn’t left alone.
However, as frightened as she was, Gwyneth tried to live her life the way she wanted to. She studied hard, she did her homework, she didn’t go to parties and fraternize. Whoever this person was was not going to stop her from pursuing her dream. And then she met him when she was a sophomore. But she didn’t know it was him. He was a little older than she was, already in college, but he was incredibly charming. He seemed to show up when she needed help and then, she developed feelings for him, still unaware that all of the mess that had been going on had been caused by him.
So, they started dating. Secretly, of course, because her parents would have flipped out if they knew their sixteen year old daughter had a boyfriend who was in his twenties. Her brothers would have probably killed him. Her eldest brother was the same age and, unknowingly to her, he used to attend her high school, in his class. Gwyneth had never had a boyfriend before, this was all new to her. They secretly dated until she graduated high school and went off to university, but he’d somehow convinced her not to go to her dream school; Harvard.
Within her first year of university, however, she fell pregnant. His parents were old fashioned, so he told her, and so he decided that they should get married. Gwyneth, who knew how her family would take the news, agreed to marrying him, purely because she knew it would be forced on her, either way.
They got married and she became Gwyneth Beckets. They had a beautiful baby boy that she had wanted to name Charlie, after her paternal grandfather, but her now husband, Peter, wanted to name his son Adam. So, Gwyneth settled for Adam Charlie Beckets. But, somewhere throughout that first year, after Adam’s birth, Peter changed. He became uninterested in Gwyneth, he was uninterested in the baby, he just wanted to spend his days drinking with his friends and hitting on girls. Soon, he became angry at Gwyneth wanting him to spend time with his son, with her, and that was when he got abusive. Until this point, he’d been the charming husband, doting father. But when he screamed in her face, Gwyneth saw a change in him. He became a different man, entirely, and she began to be scared of him. She just didn’t leave him. She never told anyone, not even her closest friends, that he was like this. She didn’t even tell her brothers, who were closer to her than anyone else. They’d get into more trouble than Peter would if they knew.
So, she endured it, for Adam’s sake. Until Peter physically struck her. She was shocked. She didn’t know what to do. The next day, he was sorry about it, he said so. But he did it again. And apologized. Again. And then, apologized. Until she’d had enough. She decided that she had to get out of the marriage and she had to leave with her son. But even though Peter was a huge d***, he doted on Adam and wouldn’t allow her to take him away. She disclosed the abuse to her mother and her mother did everything she could to help.
Peter found out, however, because he’d been bugging her phone. He knew what she was planning. She came home from her mother’s and he played it nice, until she mentioned taking a trip with her family. That was her cover story for leaving him. He flipped out. He started throwing things around, he told her he was going to kill her. He came at her and Gwyneth tried to get to the other side of the table. She grabbed a knife, to protect herself, and when he came at her, he fell onto the knife. In a panic, not knowing if he was alive or dead, Gwyneth grabbed the bag she’d prepared, grabbed Adam, and fled.
Her mother gave her enough money to buy a last minute plane ticket to get her to Vermont, where she’d meet with a woman that her mother knew. The woman was a survivor of domestic abuse and she promised to keep them safe.
It’s been two years since then. Gwyneth goes by Evelyn. The woman, Olivia, isn’t a native to the town they ended up in, Evelyn is masquerading as her daughter. And Adam, who is now four and in daycare, goes by Josh. He was so young at the time, he doesn’t remember it.
Evelyn hasn’t been in contact with her family all those years, but her mother sends Olivia money for her and her grandson, from a secret bank account in the Cayman Islands. She doesn’t know what story her mother gave her brothers, her father, or even the police, but all she can hope is that they’ll remain safe and as far away from Peter Beckets as possible.
